First Line Revision Story: Guest Post at PB First Lines

During the summer of 2020, I had the idea to write a picture book about famous mistakes from history. I began collecting “mistake stories” whenever I found them: everything from Vice President Dan Quayle’s famous misspelling of the word potato to Ada Lovelace’s programming of the first computer bug. But I didn’t know yet how these stories would fit together. (Spoiler: neither of those examples ended up making it into the book!)

One morning in the shower (I know, such a cliche!), I came up with this rhyming couplet, which became the first line of the very first draft of Marvelous Mistakes:

Have you ever forgotten the words to a song

and belted out notes that were totally wrong?
